Associate Press is the general store for the wild west of journalism.

In any uncharted territory with potential riches there are people who go first and win big.  They inspire others to come out and try to find riches of their own.  Then there is the general store owner who starts his store and makes money from outfitting the people spending their life savings to find their treasure. 

Well in this case the Associated Press is the general store.  Ok ok...I know the Associated Press is a not for profit entity made up by those who contribute to it.  I find it interesting that the AP seems to be the only thing "winning".  As a news source it is thriving.

In 2007 the search term "ap" started seeing considerable growth.  Indicating that people were searching for AP stories more and more.

By local I mean talking about the softball baked goods sell at your local highschool.  Or that little old lady turning one more year older.  People buy newspapers because they know someone who is in it or it somehow directly affects their life.  It's that simple.  Celebrity/ International star news is everywhere.  Michael Jackson news is everywhere.  There is only one place to read about the scrapbooking place that opened up on 4th and 5th.  That's your local newspaper.

The more and more they use AP stories the more they blend in with each other.

I “reach out” because I don’t care.

Lately I've been noticing the phrase "reaching out" used more and more.  It used to feel like a phrase that actually meant something but now people are using it to add the illusion of effort.

"Thanks for reaching out"

"We reached out'

It's a way to say you really really tried but in actuallity you did not try.  It wasn't that hard.  Stop using the phrase "reaching out".

Just to prove I'm not insane I did a google trends search for the terms "reach out","touch base", "get in touch", "reaching out".

Notice how in late 2008 the term "reach out" sees a spike.  It's totally taken over terms like "touch base".
